- 351: “Buddhist Economics”
- ... a bunch of rich fat people who have no concern for culture. The Buddhists believe being rich is more than material possessions and I agree. In this essay they also commented that “simplicity and non-violence” are closely related. I agree with that belief as well. I liked how E.F. Schumacher explained the importance of consumption and how it effects pressures put on society. Although people in less industrialized countries have greater worries like poverty, they don’t have as much of a problem with violence. Things are more low key and Buddhists are more focused on the importance of human character, and they believe that human character is formed by man’s work. I think Americans are lazy because as ... non-renewable fuels - coal, oil and natural gas - are exceedingly unevenly distributed over the globe and undoubtedly limited in quantity, it is clear that their exploitation at an ever-increasing rate is an act of violence against nature which must almost inevitably lead to violence between men.” I could not agree with this statement more. - 352: Desensitized America
- ... our society I can think of many instances that we accept, and in many ways we become desensitized to their horror because they are so common. A big example of this is the rampage of violence especially in our school systems. I can remember my freshman year that there was a bombing in a primary school in Scotland. I cannot even remember all of the details, but it was a truly tragic event. The fact that I cannot remember too much more of this story is an example about how we have become desensitized toward violence in schools. I think that every other day we hear instances of this type of horror. Obviously the one that stands out in my mind is the Columbine tragedy, but in between the huge stories ... but sometimes they seem less important when compared to the “bigger” tragedies. If an outsider looked into our society, and took note of this, I would hope they would be appalled at the amount of violence and tragic deaths that occur everyday in our society, and our desensitivity to it. If they are not appalled, then perhaps all of humanity has taken a step down and not just our society. ...

- 354: Dress Codes In Public Schools
- ... wide. I feel some type of dress code would cut down some of the everyday problems that schools have today. A dress code in public schooling would be a good idea because it would reduce violence, eliminate the problem of wearing hats or jackets in school, and make school more of an academic atmosphere, and less of a social one. In this paper, I will discuss why a dress code would be a good thing for public schools to have. A dress code would eliminate many problems including violence that occurs everyday in school. For example, if a simple shirt and tie with dress pants were worn by boys, and some type of skirt or dress for girls, baggy clothing would be eliminated which ... way students dress. Negative comments are often made at school by students about their classmates' clothing which provokes fighting. Obviously, some type of dress code would stop this. Studies show that a dress code reduces violence and makes students behave better because it makes everyone equal, bringing all of the students to the same level: "A dress code brings us together, like an athletic team. We're unified, we stand ...
