11671: Evolution of Immunity and the Invertebrates
... mammals evolved over quite a long time - in some rather surprising ways. In 1982 a Russian zoologist named Elie Metchnikoff noticed a unique property of starfish larva. When he inserted a foreign object through it's membrane, tiny cells would try to ingest the invader through the process of phagocytosis. It was already known that phagocytosis occurred in specialized mammal cells but never in something less complex like a starfish. This discovery led him to understand that phagocytosis played a much broader role, it was a fundamental mechanism of protection in the animal kingdom. Metchnikoff's further studies showed that the host defense system of all animals today were present millions of years before when hey were just beginning to evolve. His studies opened up the new field of comparative immunology. Comparative immunologists studied the immune defenses of past and current creatures. They gained further insight into how immunity works. The most basic requirement of an immune system is to distinguish between one's own cells and "non-self" cells. The second job is to eliminate the non- self cells. When a foreign object enters the body, several things happen. Blood stops flowing, the immunity system begins to ...

Duddy's obsession with land lies within his grandfather, Simcha. When Duddy was small, he spoke those unforgettable words to him, "A man without land is nobody." When it seemed as if nobody cared or respected him, Simcha did. Duddy did not receive the same kind of love from his father or uncle as Lennie did. When Duddy comes back from work at, he asks, "Why [Max] didn't answer any of [his] letters?" He replies he wasn't "one for letters." "But Duddy remembered that when Lennie had worked as a camp counsellor one summer his father had written every week. He had driven out to visit him twice."(pp. 104 & 105) ...

... to protect the adult education program. Our first goal was to inform and educate other adult students and to get them involved in our cause. In order to achieve this, several conferences at the school’s auditorium and cafeteria were hold. Furthermore, we went from class to class talking about the issue, in order to maximize our outreach. Through our efforts, the first adult student body at Wester Tech. was created, under the name of C.A.F.E. (Concerned Adults For Education). C.A.F.E. represented Western Tech.’s adult student body at many city wide meetings. In one of these meetings, the Toronto Adult Student Alliance, known as T.A.S.A, was created in order to fight back the government's bill 160. In October of 1997, T.A.S.A. decided to hold an adult student rally at Queen’s Park. ...

11675: The Culture Of Censorship In F
The power of one idea is overwhelming. It can change one individual's outlook on a society. Censorship is an example of such an overwhelming idea. That one idea changed the way people in the novel thought. Most people followed the idea of censorship; however Ray Bradbury focuses on one man who didn't. Mindless pleasure seeking and materialism end up destroying the culture and most of the people in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. Regardless of who the first book burner was, people began to follow this mindless act of destruction. As opposed to putting out fires, firemen started fires. Guy Montag was one of these ...

11677: Beowulf and Grendel: Craving for the Queen
Beowulf and Grendel: Craving for the Queen In both texts, Beowulf and Grendel, the main purpose of the Queen's are to serve the courts as "weavers of peace". In Grendel however, Queen Wealththeow is described in much greater detail and serves a further purpose. The reader gains insight to a part Grendel that is not present in Beowulf, his desire for a human. It was not unusual for women to be offered as tokens of peace within the noble courts. In the novel Grendel, Wealhtheow's brother, King of the Helmings, bestowed her to King Hrothgar to promote peace amongst the Helmings and Scyldings. "She had given, her life for those she loved. So would any simpering, eyelash batting female in ... only woman in the texts that was forsaken to encourage appeasement amongst feuding courts. Queen Hygd was offered to Hygelac under very similar circumstances as told in Beowulf, and portrayed the same role in Hygelac's kingdom. There is reference in both texts concerning this tradition, and it is evident to the reader that this is not an unusual Anglo-Saxon custom. Queen Wealhtheow and Queen Hygd served as excellent ...

... in its Latin translation. "By 1542 there had appeared five editions of this vast and costly work, besides many more of various parts of it. Its influence on European medicine was thus very considerable." (Arnold, T. Pg. 323-5). Throughout his works he added his own considered judgement and his own medical experience as commentary. 11679: Dulce et Decorum est: Analysis of Military Life
Dulce et Decorum est: Analysis of Military Life The brochure for the U.S. Army, Count Your Benefits in the Army Reserve, lists attractive advantages for those considering a career in the military field: reserve pay, money for college, vocational training, income tax breaks, and retirement benefits, among countless others. None of the benefits mentioned, however, are meant to outweigh what the Army reserve simply defines as the "intangible" perks of enlisting: feeling as if one belongs, fulfilling one's patriotic duty by serving his or her country, and gaining a sense of leadership. Dulce et Decorum est.... by Wilfred Owen (1893-1918 ) gives greatly contrasting images of army life, complete with graphic accounts of catastrophic death, destruction, and terror that one will probably never find in an incentive brochure. Owen's powerful words are not only a far cry from the positive images that some associate with the war and dying, but an outcry for human beings to stop spreading the notion that men and ...

... the book that shows it is what he did to a tradition in his family. For many years the Finch family had a custom that the oldest one would stay on the land. Atticus didn t want to and broke a family tradition that was kept for a long time. I know that I wouldn t be able to have that much courage to break a tradition that was kept in my family for that long. Another way that Atticus shows courage is by defending Tom Robinson. No other man in Maycomb would defend him. Atticus stood up for what he believed in, and did the right thing. Also, Jem shows a lot of courage throughout the novel. He was the one that touched Boo s house and also went to his house late at night to go to the Radley s house. He also read for one of the meanest people in Maycomb, Mrs. Dubose. Even though it was ...
