5291: The Alchemist
"That's the principle that governs all things. In alchemy, it's called the Soul of the World. When you want something with all your heart, that's when you are closest to the Soul of the World. It's always a positive force" (80). Anything I've ever wanted to happen bad enough, there has always been a way for me to achieve that goal. Or an alternative that could be more beneficial appears. Except, I wouldn't quite call it the Soul of the World. I'd call it the will of God. Both Santiago in "The Alchemist" and the priest's son in "The Water's of Babylon" worked with the Soul of the World or the will ...
5292: A Separate Peace And A Real Wa
... complicated plot in order to convey the harsh, sad, cruel, destructive forces of war. The Characters Gene and Finny are used as opposing forces in a struggle between that cold reality of war-that is World War II in this story-and a separate peace. A peace away from the real war and all of the terrible things that come with it. Through their relationship, that is a struggle on both ... Three: Everyone has a moment in history which belongs particularly to him. It is the moment when his emotions achieve their most powerful sway over him, and afterward when you say to this person “the world today” or “life” or “reality” he will assume that you mean this moment, even if it is fifty years past. The world, through his unleashed emotions, imprinted itself upon him, and he carries the stamp of that passing moment forever. (32) This statement explains that Gene must have something that is his “stamp.” This stamp appears ...

They ...
5294: The Physical Setting and Economy of Bangladesh and Singapore
... and Economy of Bangladesh and Singapore Among our centuries most urgent problems is the wholly unacceptable poverty that blights the lives of some 2,000 million people in more than 100 countries of the developing world. Of these 2,000 million, nearly 800 million are caught up in what can only be termed absolute poverty- a condition of life so limited as to prevent realization of the potential of the genes ... born; a condition of life so degrading as to be an insult to human dignity . (Hossain,1987,p.1) From one millenium to the next, one of the major panademics that is affecting our vast world is poverty. Poverty is a panademic that has been compared to such diseases as aids. Poverty has divided our world into two separate entities: developed and developing countries. This disease has mainly affected the developing world. The two main developing coutries that this paper will focus on are Singapore and Bangladesh. This paper will ...
5295: Vietnam War - The Vietnam War
... virtually unknown country. The enemy and the allies looked exactly the alike, and may by day be a friend but by night become an enemy (Aaseng 113). It matched the tried and true tactics of World War Two against a hide, run, and shoot technique known as "Guerrilla Warfare." It matched some of the best trained soldiers in the world against largely an untrained militia of untrained farmers. The United States' soldiers had at least a meal to look forward to unlike the Communist Vietnamese soldiers who considered a fine cuisine to be cold rice and, if lucky, rat meat. The Vietnam War matched the most technically advanced country with one of the least advanced, and the lesser advanced not only beat but humiliated the strongest military in the world (Aaseng, 111). When the war was finally showing signs of end, the Vietnamese returned to a newly unified communist country while the United Stated soldiers returned to be called "baby killers", and were often ...

5297: Charles Dickens
... London. 1 Just before he started to toddle, he stepped into the glare of footlights. He never stepped out of it until he died. He was a good man, as men go in the bewildering world of ours, brave, transparent, tender-hearted, and honorable. Dickens was always a little too irritable because he was a little too happy. Like the over-wrought child in society, he was splendidly sociable, and in and yet sometimes ... of The Great Men, American Book-Stratford Press, NY., 1942 pg.19 2. Ibid, pg. 21-22 3. 5298: The Hale Bopp Comet
The Hale Bopp Comet As I am sure all of you know, we have recently been able to see a new but not permanent additon to the night sky. This addition is known as Hale-Bopp, a comet that is about 122 million miles (about 1.3 times the distance of the sun to the earth) from the earth and is approximately 25 miles wide. Hale-Bopp was discovered on July 23,1995 by two scientists named Alan Hale in New Mexico and Thomas Bopp in Arizona. This is the first discovery for both of them, although Alan Hale is one of the top visual comet observers in the world, having seen about 200 comet apparitions. That is one of the reasons they put his name first. Alan Hale comments, "I love the irony -- I've spent over 400 hours of my life looking ...
5299: The Creation of the Universe
... cannot yet ascertain what was before this beginning, but we now know that there was one. To suggest that the universe has always existed is a mere myth today. Much like the myth that the world was once flat. Today, we take for granted that the world is indeed round, for have we not seen pictures from the space shuttle in orbit of the earth. Not to mention the multitude of orbital shots from satellites. Consequently we would consider it preposterous if someone attempted to tell us that the world is a flat surface. Yet, upon blind faith, some are content to believe that a "creative hand" structured this existence. Although the figures (Gods) differ from mythos to mythos, all the ancient stories intend ...

... of the air and acid rain have become recognized as one of the leading threats to our planet’s environment. Some laws have been passed which limit the amount of pollutants that are released into the air, but tougher legislation must be implemented before this problem can be overcome. Acid rain is produced, when automobiles ... to reduce, or hopefully end the problem. The acid kills nearly all forms of life, and tens of thousands of lakes have already been destroyed by acid rain. Some of the great monuments of the world such as the cathedrals of Europe and the Coliseum in Rome are beginning to be eaten away by the acidic rainfall. Many laws have been passed such as the Clean Air Act of 1970, and ... a 50% decrease of sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide, &0% decrease of carbon monoxide, and 20% of other emissions. Also in 1990, the California Air Resources Board introduced the strictest vehicle emission controls in the world. Many other northeastern states came up with similar controls, but California was the toughest, giving the state until 2003 to decrease hydrocarbon emissions of new cars by 70% and to make sure that al ...
