In ancient Greece, Odysseus of Ithaca was considered great because he was the only mortal to use his mind to its potential. In the Odyssey, this also gained him the favor of the gods because he survived by using his mind when many mortals would have perished. Before he sailed to fight in the Trojan War, Odysseus was already a respected leader in Greece. His plans and machinations helped the Greeks triumph in the War, particularly with his brilliant strategy leveraging the Trojan Horse. Odysseus then survived the terror of Poseidon Earthshaker only to struggle for his life on the way home. Odysseus created many unique stratagems and devices to overcome each problem barring his way to a peaceful homecoming in Ithaca.
