Ernest Hemingway’s classic novel, A Farewell to Arms, is one of the greatest love and war stories of all time. When the United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, Hemingway tried to enlist in the army. He was rejected due to an eye injury that he sustained during his high school football career.
