To Kill A Mockingbird: Wearing Masks Why do some people wear a mask? What drives or compels people to become other than what they are? How can this relate to the characters in To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee? Some individuals wear a mask out of fear, others in hope to establish a good image, still others to project ignorance or their own opinions. I believe Jem, Calpurnia, and Atticus wear these masks, therefore they will act as my test subjects in exploring the reasons and solutions to wearing a mask. I begin with Jem. Jem, in the book, begins as a character very much appreciative of his sister. He shows respect and love for her many times throughout the book, and demonstrates these characters up until the second part of the book, where Jem becomes disagreeable, moody, and displays general discontentment with his sister and her conduct.
