The Glass Menagerie: Amanda Wingfield Is Annoying I found the character of the mother Amanda Wingfield really quite annoying to listen to after a few moments of hearing her. It brought back many memories of my ex-husband’s mother. She was just as much a nag as Amanda. A person could never sit down at the dinner table without her yelling at someone to get his or her elbows off the table, or chew with one’s mouth close. Like in Scene 1, where amanda asks Tom to come to the table, reminds me of when I used to hate dinnertime at Eva’s house. It was a real blessing when she went out of town. She would always instruct my son to not push food into his mouth, like Amanda said to Tom. A person could not eat dinner a leisurely way with her there. I see exactly why Tom got up and left the table. I did this many times just so I would not hear argume....
