The name Benedict Arnold has become a synonym for a traitor to one's country. In the first years of the American Revolution, however, Arnold was a brilliant and dashing general, highly respected for his service to the patriot cause. He distinguished himself in several battles, reached the rank of major general, and was considered one of General Washington's most trusted officers.
Arnold was born on January 14, 1741, in Norwich, Connecticut. Both his parents were of families that were established and respected in New England. During his youth, he served as an apprentice to an apothecary, but preferred fighting to the life of a pharmacist and enlisted in the military during the French and Indian War.
