They moved to Detroit and that's where he grew up and started his boxing career. Joe was sixteen when he started in the amatuer boxing ring. His mother was giving him money for violin lessons, but Joe Louis was not interested in them.He spent the money on Boxing lessons at the Brewster Recreation center. When his mother found out, she was angry. Still she encouraged him to do his best at boxing.
