Clarence Thomas Supreme Court Justice. The second Afro-American ever elected to hold the highest Judicial post in America. His story is one of uniqueness as well as perseverance, learned lessons of survival and hardships. In 1991 then President George W. Bush nominated Mr. Thomas for Supreme Court Justice after then Justice Thurgood Marshall retired. As a child Mr. Thomas says, he could not dare dream of ever seeing the Supreme Court, not to mention ever being nominated to it. He was reared in then segregated Savannah, Ga. being raised by his maternal grandparents. While Mr. Thomas grew up poor, Black and a Democrat, he entered the Republican Party whose views were controversial and often revolved around his emphasis on Black self-help.
