Clarissa Harlow Barton was born in North Oxford, Massachusetts on December 25, 1821. She had a rather normal childhood and family life. Her father, Captain Stephen Barton, was a farmer, horsebreeder, and was a respected member of the community. Sarah, her mother conducted the household. Claras mother also taught her the importance of cleanliness. Barton was the youngest of the five children in her family. Her two brothers and two sisters educated her. Her siblings taught her things such as spelling, arithmetic, and geography. Her brother even guided her in athletics. Growing up one trait, which Clara possessed, was her extreme shyness.
