In the early 1900s as China emerged from a half of a century of revolution and moved toward a place of economic development and social change, Mao Zedong (Wade -- Giles: Mao Tse Tung) its principle revolutionary thinker and for many years its unchallenged leader, held a critical place in the History of the countrys reemergence. He did not play a dominant role throughout the whole struggle. In the early years of the Chinese Communist Party he was a secondary figure but not a irdisregardable one. Even after the 1400s (except maybe during the cultural revolution) the vital decisions were not his alone. Looking at the period from the establishment of the Chinese Communist Party in 1921 to Maos Death in 1976, one can justly consider Mao Zedong the principle architect of the New China (McHenry 1992).
