Christopher Columbus was often received and remembered by the “schoolbook” image of him as a heroic, brave, modern individual spreading Christian civilization. According to those absorbed in this “myth”, his most important heroic attribution was his discovering of the New World, which led to immense progress. However, based on both primary and secondary sources, Columbus was not a hero in that he did not attribute any heroic acts of discovering a New World. Rather, he had “reflected” the opportunities that was in his situation and consequently “discovered” a New World. Furthermore, he misinterpreted himself in order to appear to be a hero. In this sense, he was a “villain” in that he produced facts in ways to his advantage of profit and fame.
Columbus was not similar to other historical heroe....
