Doris Lessing's Life and Her Writings Doris Lessing was born of British parents in 1919. She grew up in Rhodesia after moving there when she was only five years old. Lessing has proven herself as one of the most outspoken and controversial writers of her time. She is not afraid to touch on subjects that express her unaccepted views. She is a feminist and has many of her female characters play as a heroine defeating what most women are afraid to conquer, inferiority (Scott-Kilvert,184). She writes in what she calls straight, broad and direct. Lessing, in many of her stories, has woven much of her own life experiences into her work.
