Since the beginning of Belize’s existence we, as a people, have always been influenced by “outside” cultures. European culture and traditions flooded in at the start of the colony and prevailed in “British Honduras” for many decades. Slowly, but definitely surely, Western Civilization began seeping into Belize and by the time we gained independence America had its hooks rooted deep within our very society. Suddenly traditional wear and way of life was unacceptable and down right wrong. Belizeans, more specifically the younger generations, wanted clothes from The States ,or nothing else. Modern appliances ,architecture and infrastructure was adapted so as to suit our now “culturally enriched” knowledge of the “outside world”.
