In my essay I will refer to Patients, Patience Strong, Sisyphus, Canal:1977, BC;AD, The Contributor’s and The Sheepdog.
Patients is a very disturbing poem in that it challenges the way we usually see the hospital staff. We would prefer to view the hospital staff as professional, reliable, stable and infallible people. Here they are shown as lazy ( the nurses ) lecherous (the psychiatrist ) neurotic ( the director ) and eccentric ( the matron.) The poet writes as though she is part of the problem, “ But what can be done for us “ so it is more believable as she is writing from direct experience of the illnesses and bizarre behaviour that occurs among the staff of the hospital. .
