With the evolution of society, materialism has become strongly present in our every day lives. Constantly exposed to changing styles and habits, today's generation is forced to keep up with rising standards that are overwhelming and destructive. As illustrated in the poem, "Barbie Doll," by Marge Piercy the character faced such strong pressure by society to fit in, that she tragically took her own life.
This theme is strongly present from the beginning of the poem where the first paragraph contains a message concerning the loss of childhood innocence. It describes how the girl was born as,"usual," just like every other child. She played with toys, makeup e.t.c. It was the simplicity of childhood. All these innocent ideas and views ended when she became surrounded by the pressures of puberty. The word "magic" ....
