I can remember when my oldest brother Brad turned sixteen and bought a 1952 pickup truck from our neighbor. It seemed at the time that nothing could have been cooler than having someone in the family other than our parents able to drive. That old pickup certainly appealed to the younger brother hoping to be able to cruise around in style, or so I thought. Compared to the new 1978 pickup that my Dad owned, the old ’52 certainly was an antiquated piece of junk, but it still typified the rural American male perception of appropriate transportation. The American made pickup truck as it would seem according to the commercials is certainly an extension of the American way of life, and is most definitely as common as hot dogs and apple pie.
