The tradition, which began in America, provides an emotional period of bonding between the family, community, and culture. Each year, Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 to January 1. Its roots lie in the motherland of Africa during the first harvest celebrations from which it takes its designation. The name Kwanzaa, evolved from the phrase “matunda ya kwanzaa” means “first fruits” in Swahili, the chief language spoken throughout Africa.
