The Temple of Zeus
The temple of Zeus at Olympia was built in the mid to late fourth century BC. It was built using funds from the “Elean defeat of neighboring Pisa, an example of the ongoing struggle for power in ancient Greece” (Furer). The architect of the temple was Libon. Libon built the structure with limestone and white stucco in a pure Doric style. To modify the temple a chryselephantine statue of the god in whose honor the ancient Olympic games were held, Zeus, was built by the famous sculptor Pheidias. Zeus was the most famous statue of antiquity, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Pheidias was assigned the sculpture as a “Sacred task, reminiscent of Michaelangelo’s paintings at the Sistine Chapel”(Larrinda).
Pheidias built the statue of Zeus by erecting a wooden frame on which sheets of metal and ivory were used to construct the outer layer. The throne’s base was ....
