Black Elk Speaks is a play about the history of the relations between American Indians and Europeans from the first contacts to the present. My first thoughts of being assigned to attend the show were not very positive. I expected to endure an evening of hell with my sanity preserved solely by intermission and the finale. I am in no way a history buff so the content of the play did not appeal to all of my senses. I enjoyed certain aspects of the play, rather than the entire production.
Although this play is about Indians, the director, Melba Martinez, cast many Eurocentric actors to play the roles of Indians. The production is done mainly by college students, therefore I believe she had no other options. She had to cast the play to actors who could depict the characters, not simply to people who were Indians....
