In the fifth century, the states imposed a classification system, which provided a method for dividing up the speaking parts in Greek drama; this is know as the "three actor rule". The three-actor rule had many advantages and disadvantages.
The three-actor rule made it so playwrights could have greater freedom with their script. This allowed for an increased complexity of the plot. Actors had several different options in character choices. There could be many more twist and turns throughout the play. They no longer had to send out the messenger to describe what had happened. They could actually show what occurred.
