John Synge made an attempt to glorify the Irish peasants by writing a play titled Riders to the Sea . Instead, they thought it was an insult, and as a result, the peasants rebelled because of their misinterpretation.
First of all, the audience objected to the play because of their lack of education. They were unable to analyze the sub-text and see what Synge was really trying to express. For example, a first incident was when another man died, Maurya would not cry. This showed to them a cold, heartless woman. She showed no emotion towards death, and did not affect her in a negative way. A second misinterpretation dealt with the thoughts of God. Many would say, God would never take a mothers last son, but this was viewed as false because God did take Mauryas last son.
