Hades
Deep down in the realm of the dead there dwells the god of the
underworld. Hades was worshipped by the Greeks and by the Romans. The Roman
name for him though was Pluto. He became feared by the people because they
were afraid of what happened to them after they were dead. When Hades and
his three brothers overthrew Chronus, he took over the underworld. His
brothers became the gods of the sea and of the heavens. Zeus became the
ruler of the heavens and Posiedon became the ruler of the seas but the most
feared of the three was Hades.
The Dead were guided to the River Styx by Hermes, who handed them
over to the ferryman, Charon. If bribed with a coin, he would transport
them across the river. If they had no coin, they were doomed to wander the
riverbank for eternity. Thus it was Greek custom to bury their dead with a
