An attachment is defined as a psychological bond between an infant and his or her primary caregiver Bowlby (1969). Attachment provides a secure emotional base from which mature relationships develop. Research shows that inadequate attachment such as, malnutrition and any type of abuse, hinders the social and emotional development throughout life.
Attachment behaviors are discrete observable behaviors such as smiling, crying, clinging, etc. These behaviors are used to bring the adult into the proximity of the child. Attachment forms over a period of time. The person has to be around the child for a long time. Bowlby (1969) suggested three phases in the development of the infant's attachment:
