This is probably because the US violent crime rate has been increasing. A violent crime occurs every sixteen seconds in the U.S. (Adler 1994). According to Pernanen (1991), studies already show that over 50% of the assailants were intoxicated at the time the violent crime was committed. In the balance placebo design, half of the participants are told they will receive alcohol and half the participants are told they will not receive alcohol.
