Smoking on Campus Have you ever been walking, sitting, or studying in the walkways of SPJC and found it hard to breath comfortably? This is an everyday occurrence for me and several other SPJC students the moment a cigarette is lit. This may appear to be a minor problem, but the effects of second hand smoking are staggering. The health of tens of thousands of nonsmoking Americans a year is affected by cigarette smokers. Of those who do not smoke 53,000 will die and countless others will suffer from cardiovascular diseases as reported by the American Heart Association (Rumpf 20-21). Visible smoke contributes only 5-8 % to the total output of a cigarette. The remaining bulk that cannot be seen makes up the so-called vapor or gas phase of cigarette “smoke.” It contains, besides nitrogen and oxygen, a bewildering assortment of toxic gases, such as carbon monoxid....
