It could be argued that British Prime Ministers have not always been in an all-powerful position. It could be said that they are in fact, subject to various limitations.
The British Prime Minister is that person who leads the majority party in the House of Commons, or who commands a majority of support in that House. PMs continue in office until they resign (eg due to ill-health - Macmillan 1963), or concede defeat after a general election (eg Wilson 1970). They may also resign after losing a 'Motion of No Confidence' in the House - but this is a rare event, the most recent cases being in 1924 and 1979, and in the latter case - Callaghan called an election for May 1979 (and resigned once the results of the election were known).
