The Secret Service The secret service is a service that many people do not know about. In addition to guarding the president, the secret service has been used for many other tasks since its creation. At the close of the Civil War, between one-third and one-half of all U.S. paper currency in circulation was counterfeit. On July 5, 1865, the Secret Service was created as a bureau under the Department of the Treasury to combat the counterfeiting going on. Within less than a decade, counterfeiting was drastically reduced due to the Secret service. During these early years the Secret Service investigated cases as well. These cases included the Teapot Dome oil scandals, the Ku Klux Klan, Government land frauds, and counterespionage activity during the Spanish- American War and World War I.
