James Madison's Opinion Why A Republic is Better Than A Democracy
Madison explains why, in his view, a Republic is better than a
Democracy. His concern with a Democracy is in the formations of factions
(parties). Madison believed that man is selfish and will act in his/her own
self interests in spite of the greater good of humanity (sort of
Machiavellian).
His solution:
He first argues that if you eliminate the causes of a faction
(religion, political belief, etc.) you would have to eliminate
symptoms...liberty. 'The remedy is worse than the cause.' Obviously this is
preposterous. Therefore, he chose to address how to limit the effects.
A government must be organized so that if an oppressive political
faction gains power, that there are substantial safeguards in place....
