In his play, Antigone, Sophocless depiction of Creon proves him to
be the strongest candidate for a Greek tragedy. Through his presentation
of hubris, error in judgment, and realization of downfall, Creon posses the
majority of characteristics necessary in being a central tragic figure.
One may suspect Antigone represents the tragic figure because the
play is, in fact, named after her. She also presents the reader with many
qualities a tragic figure holds and compels us to believe she is the best
suited for the position. Antigones purpose, however, is not to fulfill
this goal but rather serve as a foil in Creons actions and set him up to
realize the error in his ways. And it is this, the realization of downfall,
which distinguishes these two characters from one another and makes Creon
the ulti....
