Sparta Sparta was a city-state in Greece on the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula in Laconia. This city-state was predominately a military society. City-states were independent geographical locations usually surrounded by walls with their own form of government. Because of the mountainous rugged terrain of Greece, communication and travel were relatively impossible. The independent city-states hated when others interfered and so when two happened upon the other they often ended up fighting each other. Sparta was very much a military society because after the Dark Ages, slaves outnumbered their masters twenty to one. To keep the large number of slaves from rising up against them, the Spartans had to make and maintain a strong military force. One of the more major wars Sparta was in was the Peloponnesian War. This war lasted for twenty-seven years, with a six year truce also. The war star....
