In his essay "The Attitude of Fiction," Lesser says that in fiction, as in real life, a character's ego (the striving for goals) conflicts with the super ego (the voice of reason and moderation). In the two short stories "The Necklace" and "The Story of an Hour" exhibits the struggle between the ego and super ego of Mrs. Mallard and Mrs. Loisel. They are both determined to get what they want by putting the super ego attitude on, and they both do not get exactly what they want.
In "The Story of an Hour," Mrs. Mallard is lonely in her life with her husband. She did not really have an ego because she felt she had nothing in her life while her husband was around. She even believed that her heart trouble was based ....
