In the beginning of the Iliad, Agamemnon dishonored Apollos priest, which was an insult to him. He punished the Greeks for this and said he would stop the plagues only if Agamemnon gave up his prize of honor-Chryseirs. Achilles, a godlike Greek warrior, argued with Agamemnon that he should just give up Chryseirs because it is not worth the plagues and war Apollo had been causing. But Agamemnon did not want end up with nothing so he took Achilles prize of honor-Briseis. This not only angered but disrespected Achilles so he withdrew from battle against the Trojans.
Achilles mother convinced Zeus to show the Greeks that without Achilles, the Trojans would surely defeat them. By this they would have to plead for Achilles to return which would restore his honor. So Zeus sent Agame....
