I am not a man; I am not black; I do not have a very commanding presence nor am I now afraid of much. But I can relate to the prejudice, the intimidation by others and the stereotyping Brent Staples writes about in his essay “Just Walk On By.”
First off, I am not black; therefore, I have already gotten off to a bad start. I have had some experience with the types of prejudice Staples mentions in the Podhoritz essay “My Negro Problem–And Ours.” I grew up in a house that had a basis in prejudice. My Grandfather was prejudice toward the entire black population in the fact that he felt they were trying to take over. Every day there would be a saying or two about how the “God damned niggers were going to take over” or the ever popular “blacks are okay, I think everyone should own one....
