The Odyssey
The Odyssey, written by Homer, is a story about a man (Odysseus) and his twenty-year journey home from the wars of Troy. This book also contains another journey traveled by Odysseus’s son Telemachus. His journey is not about travel, but becoming a man. Throughout The Odyssey Telemachus reaches manhood, but never the level of greatness like his farther.
Telemachus enters the story as a grown man in size, but acts immature. He is thought of as a nuisance by the suitors, who are destroying his home. He also does not possess the skills to drive them away. Homer states, “- if only he might drop from the clouds and drive these suitors all a rout throughout the halls and regain his pride of place and rule his own domain!” (I, 136). This is a prayer for help. Because he can not handle the situation himself, he is hoping....
