Frank O’Connor’s “First Confession” is a simple story expressive of Frank O’Connor’s views of life in Ireland. The entire short story can be related to different periods of O’Connor’s life. It is a story of a little boy who is about to make his first confession. When he finally does, finds that its not so bad after all.
It would be fair to compare Frank O’Connor to Jackie, the little boy in the story. Jackie is very attached to his mother. He will not even eat unless she fixes him something for him. O’Connor loved his mother very intensely. In fact, he had something resembling an oedipal complex. He was jealous of the love that his mother gave to his father. He even took her maiden name.
