Essay Galaxy - Antigone: Summary
Antigone By: Sophocles
Antigone begins as Antigone and Ismene talk about their brothers' deaths in the war. The one brother, Eteocles, was buried with great military honors, whereas the other brother, Polyneces, was left in the field to rot. Antigone was angered by this and was determined to bury him, even though the penalty was death by stoning. Antigone asked Ismene, her sister, for help with the burial, but Ismene refused.
The next day a servant passing by noticed that someone, in an attempt to bury the corpse, had sprinkled dust over it. After a debate the servant decided to tell the king, Creon. The news frustrated Creon and he demanded to know who did this. A sentry admitted that he was a witness and placed the blame on Antigone.
Antigone is brought to the king and found guilty. Ismene is also present and she tries to share the blame with her sister, but Antigone refuses her help.
