He left my grandmother by herself to raise a child under the help of her parents' shelter and emotional help, and he would send his check he received from the Air Force. It was not common for my grandmother and for women in the mid 1940's to work and leave their children behind. After my grandfather returned from WWII, he was able to see his wife and his three-year-old son (whom he had never seen before). Prior to my grandma's marriage, after college, she started in the family business. She worked with her father at their funeral home. When she started there, she wanted to become a mortician like her father. But her father kept telling her that it was not acceptable for women in these days to work and leave their child....
