This quote from Paule Marshall's article "To Da-Duh, In Memoriam" synthesizes one of the recurring themes throughout the story, contrasts. In this article, Marshall retells the story of when she and her New York family go to visit her grandmother, nicknamed Da-Duh, in Barbados. Throughout this trip, Marshall, as a young girl, is constantly confronted with several contrasts. There are two particularly obvious contrasts in the context of the story.
