Stuart Taylors recent article entitled Why the Story Matters, published in Newsweek Magazine on August 30, 1999, makes an attempt to support tabloid journalism in the name of good democratic process. His premise that candidate George W. Bush practices hypocrisy in his refusal to disclose his self described, young and irresponsible escapades, in light of the fact, that he sought, and was successful in establishing, new law in Texas that would hold youthful offenders to stiff penalties for possibly the same, young and irresponsible escapades, that he refuses to disclose, guides his reader away from the real issue. Mr. Taylor concludes, Mr. Bushs failure to disclose cant square with his position that whether he used drugs is irrelevant to his candidacy.
