In the essay “ Enclosed. Encyclopedic. Endured: The Mall of America” the author David Guterson describes the mall as a “…monstrous hallucination…”(211). Is the mall nothing more than an oversized shopping center, designed to look extravagant and patriotic? This “Megamall” has attracted shoppers from all over the globe, who get lost in its vast amount of stores and try to relieve stress and feelings of claustrophobia in the seven-acre theme park, Knott’s Camp Snoopy. The designers tried to create an environment that was meaningful to every American, a place where families could relax and enjoy the day together. However, the author persuades the reader that the mall is nothing more than a glorified shopping center.
