Free Speech on Campus The first amendment states that we, as Americans, have the right to free speech. The way that I have interpreted this is to say what I want, when I want. I believe that we Americans have earned this right. My parents brought me up to also believe that if you don’t have something nice to say then don’t say anything at all. I think that college students should have enough sense to know what is okay to say to somebody without hurting anyone’s feelings. A twenty-one year old male student at Brown University was expelled for yelling racial comments at people while under the influence of alcohol. I could understand if this boy was arrested for public intoxication or disturbing the peace, but I believe that Brown University took the case way past extremes to expel the boy.
