Its hard to believe, but Cincinnati once sat in the heart of the Northwest Territory. In the 1700s, this area was the wilds, the untamed and unknown frontier. The British policy up through the Revolutionary War, while we were nothing more than the colonies to the queen, was to leave the area to the Indians, who were already angry about being pushed from their eastern territories.
Native Americans were very prominent in the area, and their influence is seen in many of the names and historic sites found in the area. Native American artifacts, in fact, are still being discovered during excavations for new buildings. Burial grounds and serpent-shaped mounds are scattered throughout the region.
