The Friar clearly outwits the Summoner in Geoffrey Chaucer’s marvelous novel, The Canterbury Tales. In “The Friar’s Tale” the friar cleverly portrayed an image of the summoner whereas in “The Summoner’s Tale,” the summoner relied upon vulgarity to depict a portrait of the friar. In “The Friar’s Tale” the summoner was shamefaced of his employment, but the friar in “The Summoner’s Tale” was not ashamed of his occupation. The summoner in “The Friar’s Tale” is dragged to hell by the devil. However, the friar in “The Summoner’s Tale” is merely embarrassed. Finally, the friar states in “The Friar’s Tale” that he is beyond the control of the summoner.
