This novel explored the dramatic meaning of guilt and sin among the Puritans way of living presented in the 17th century. The main character that was forced to live in sham by displaying an extraordinary gold embroidered letter “A” (referring to adultery) upon her chest was Hester Prynne. Her lover, whom she committed the crime with, which is why she wears the “A” in the first place was Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale.
