Atticus Finch is the father of Jem and Scout Finch. He feels he must do his best to raise both of them to have high moral values and a good understanding of what is right and what is wrong. Jem and Scout both idolize Atticus and listen to what he says because they know he is right and what he is telling them are important things. Joe is a parental figure for Pip. Joe feels he must send certain messages to Pip about how to live but under his circumstances is not very successful at conveying them to Pip. Atticus is a father who knows how to teach his children what they need to know in order to be good human beings while Joe is similar in his beliefs, he lacks the teaching ability that Atticus possesses.
