Animal Farm and the Russian Revolution
George Orwell, the author of Animal Farm, wanted to create a fable to show how government could oppress people. This novel is in many ways similar to Russia during the 1920’s and 1930’s. In both situations, the working class overthrew its leader and started a new society.
In Animal Farm, Mr. Jones was the farmer who was overthrown by the animals, who represent the Russian working class. The animals of Manor Farm overthrew Mr. Jones because they wanted to work less and eat more. Also, they wanted all animals to be equal. However, the pigs began to emerge as the leaders and the animals were no longer equal. Because Napoleon, the main leader, was a pig, the pigs did not work nearly as much as the other animals. The other animals were working longer and eating the same amount of food
