Coming of age is a process in life by which a person matures by learning valuable lessons and gaining a sense of responsibility. Lee portrays this process of coming of age in To Kill a Mockingbird through her two main characters, Jem and Scout. Jem and Scout live in Maycomb County with their father, Atticus, and their housekeeper Calpurnia. They greatly influence Jem and Scout and teach them important life lessons. Calpurnia is like a mother to them since their own mother had died when Scout was two years old. Throughout the novel, these children grow up as a result of experiencing new things in their society and overcoming hardships.
