Nathaniel Hawthorn’s epic short-story “The Young Goodman Brown”, is a story about a fall from innocence. The character that looses his innocence, or his illusion of innocence, is the main character, Goodman Brown. As the pages of the story are turned, Goodman Brown’s outlook on his Salem community changes considerably. Feelings of distrust and a sense of wickedness replace Goodman Brown’s initial trust and admiration for the people of Salem. Hawthorn develops this change in Goodman Brown through a series of occurrences. These specific occurrences relate directly to stages of Goodman Brown’s disillusionment.
